Don’t forget to breath! I found myself clenching my jaws and holding my breath! The chase is on!SCAN… wow I was caught way off guard! I purposely avoid reviews and lots of info on the book before I read it, other than the synopsis. It was somewhat hard to not read about the book due to one of the authors also being the producer of Divergent. Walter Jury has written a book that could easily be picked up for a movie. This was not an accident as he discusses in MTV News article “‘Divergent’ Producer Shares The Scoop On More Screen-Ready YA Reads“.
As much as I hate stuff like this it works in this case. At least it is not the toys that were made for the movie CONAN inspiring a cartoon, HE-MAN.. ok that was an urban-myth but still you get what I am saying. When movies are edited, shot, written and created these days with merchandising in mind (ie Harry Potter) why not write a novel with the idea it will make a good movie. Hey, Divergent made 100 million in the box office two-weeks out. Personally the second book was my favorite, the first book was OK and the third book blows goats… crap sorry guys I went off on a side path. But this just goes to show how picky I am with young adult reads.
I don’t need to go into what makes a good Young Adult read, you can see how I think from my latest POST on the subject. What makes this a good one is the realism involved in the characters. As far as following the basic guidelines within the conventions of the genre over all I would call this medium-hard sci-fi. As much as it focuses on the characters and their relationships because of the fact Tate was trained and obviously a gifted child with his quirky MacGyver-like on the fly actions, it also focuses on the tech. The whole story is centered around the tech in fact but I won’t get into that just yet.
The relationship between Tate and his father killed me at the beginning. I was just shocked. I felt so sad and upset but when it was revealed why this was going on though I still thought Dad was an jerk in many ways, I understood. After all humankind was in the balance. Their point of view was balanced enough that Tate was still the focus but I was always wondering what was going on with Christine or in her head.
Another wonderful thing was the mystery. I’ve discussed “The Mystery vs. A Mystery” in a review last year. Sometimes not knowing even in the end what happens is totally OK. Having somewhat of a mystery left unanswered is totally workable especially if you have the intent of a sequel. We had questions answered but we also had enough not answered and teased just right we know there is going to be some great things coming up in the sequel! (Damn it 2015 cannot come soon enough!!)
Tate is Dad 2.o using science as a weapon to defeat and to survive. What I loved is that even though SCAN was definitely a fantastical story it met the conventions of young adult reads in so much it is dealing with real young adult problems. Parents not trusting them with the truth and not realizing they were growing up. Continually pressuring them into being bigger and better with the kids feeling they never will be good enough. My parents, though they really were doing what they thought was good parenting, used to say “That’s great Kristine, BUT………”. It killed me and to this day I still have issues with that. I never feel like I do things good enough. Tate has had a lot of this going on in his life and is reaching that point of either rebelling or giving in.
The Christine in SCAN is a kick-in the pants kinda gal. She doesn’t take crap and she fights for everyone in her life. She is very loyal and loves Tate giving him the solid center he has needed to get through all the trials his father has been putting him through. I adore her. Her storyline had me holding my breath the most. Her partnership with Tate is so complimentary. What each lacks the other does not and yet they are so strong with so many things.
One thing that I want to add. The parents… sigh, all the adults in general.. sigh again… Don’t get upset. As I mentioned above Dad pissed me off, heck Mom did too but .. and this is a big one. SCAN is written for young adults in mind. How many times have you heard a teenager scream “I hate you!” and slam a door. The perspective of how a teen views his parents is not all the way there but it hints at it. As an adult I could choose to say, “Damn it that is NOT how real parents are!! Those characters are blown way out of proportion!” What I am going to say, and stress…
“Tates parents are flavored with teenage angst!”
Yep! SCAN is full of hidden messages, heck not all are hidden they are somewhat obvious. It is not lacking in anything a young adult read needs. I love the science of it, I love the fact that it has an alien invasion angle that combines conspiracy theories with a twist on the invasion of earth.. oh wait I forgot the aliens, or did I save this tidbit for dessert!
The Aliens.. oh man did I not see this one coming! Oh and I promised a tease about the tech. Tate’s dad does work for a R&D company and we later find out the actual reason behind this. It turns out the secret his parents are hiding happens to be not only the knowledge of the aliens but that he is one of only 50 family lines of pure………. oh crap you thought I was gonna do it huh? Oh no no no… so not gonna do it! Sweetie that would be….
Spoilers Sweetie!!
You so thought I was gonna go there huh? Hey, go grab a copy of SCAN won’t be disappointed. I can’t believe the book was 336 pages long. I had pre-ordered it so I had it on my Fire when I opened it up on the 30th of April. I fell asleep around 5am the next day done… and the ending? This was why it gets a 9 out of 10 instead of a solid 10 from me. It was the most HARSH intense cliff hanger I have read in a LONG time. Because I read a lot of Indie books if there is a cliff hanger I usually do not bitch to much but this is not Indie and so it means waiting at least a year till the next one. I was really mad. It took me down a bit but it was the perfect ending for not only a great thriller but one that will work well with the movies. Well, lets see how that goes! I have already had one of my top reads of this year, Grasshopper Jungle, be picked up with a movie deal! Why not this one!?

Fun to read. Fast paced with lots of twists and turns. When is book two coming? It obviously has one...
I bought this book to review it as a possible read for my grandchildren. While I bought it with them in mind, I very much enjoyed it myself. Good fast paced adventure. Would highly recommend it.
I am beginning to fume at authors or publishers who sell me a book without letting me know it is book 1. I think there should be labels that tell an unsuspecting reader that it is only a partial book. For the money they asked for this book, it should have been a complete book.
A fast paced and action packed story. Could hardly wait to finish it to start the 2nd book.
I wasn't really sure about this book, but decided to get it. I'm really glad I took the chance. The story flows well, the characters are believable. It took a few pages to really get going, but once it did, it never stopped. If your looking for entertainment, escape from life a bit and read this! You won't be dissatisfied.
Another good read sold by . It is slow to start but once it gets in gear it doesn't slow down. The reason I gave it only 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the main character's over passion of his girl friend. You can only describe the love of your life so much before it starts to aggravate and bore the reader. And with the main character being a trained black belt, he did not use it one time to protect himself or the love of his life.
Lots of ups and downs, high speed chases, deception of those you are told you can trust. I recommend this to all readers both young and old. There were several parts of the book that I caught myself sitting at the edge of my chair... A few of those times saying WTH out loud.
Reading this book you won't regret. Not reading it you don't know what you are reading.
I predict that SCAN is going to be a blockbuster hit on.the YA charts. Why? This pull-no-punch story gets down to the nitty-gritty where adolescents live their emotions, their fears, their first loves; that crazy generational gap, seemingly impassable, that always occurs between parents and offspring--the need to blend in society constantly warring with the drive for independence of identity. And then when you add in the video game violence suddenly erupting in real life, and --whoops! Aliens--SCAN can't lose!
Don’t forget to breath! I found myself clenching my jaws and holding my breath! The chase is on!
