I lived in Florence as a student; and still reading this book really made it come alive, and taught me much that I did not know.This is in certainly a travel book, but it is also really an insightful, delightful history and adventure tale by Lucas. In our busy rush, we have lost the pleasure of time with a raconteur. Lucas will make you regret that loss.
Lucas is of another time, a time when there was time. When we did not say if it is Tuesday this must be Belgium; and of a time when we did not have business meetings on airplanes and then hop back of the plane.
I savored this book and and every one by Lucas that I have read.

Travels of an Englishman in Florence at the beginning of the 20th century. interesting but the file does not include the entire book. I was interested to see what the author had to say about Savonarola but alas that part of the book is not included in the file.
so boring I never made it past the first chapter Probably if I'd lived 100 years ago, I would have found it interesting, but we don't use 50-word sentences today
