Aesop (c620-c560), known only for the genre of fables ascribed to him, was by tradition a slave who was a contemporary of Croesus and Peisistratus in the mid-sixth century BC in ancient Greece. The various collections that go under the rubric Aesop's Fables are still taught as moral lessons and used as subjects for various entertainments, especially children's plays and cartoons. Most of what are known as Aesopic fables is a compilation of tales from various sources, many of which originated with authors who lived long before Aesop. Aesop himself is said to have composed many fables, which were passed down by oral tradition. Socrates was thought to have spent his time turning Aesop's fables into verse while he was in prison. Demetrius Phalereus, another Greek philosopher, made the first collection of these fables around 300 BC. This was later translated into Latin by Phaedrus, a slave himself, around 25 BC. The fables from these two collections were soon brought together and were eventually retranslated into Greek by Babrius around A. D. 230. Many additional fables were included, and the collection was in turn translated to Arabic and Hebrew, further enriched by additional fables from these cultures.

Small small stories that teach common sense and values in a nice tidy book. I needed to make some salient points in a business presentation recently to a group of Chinese executives, and used a story from this book to give them a visual and mental understanding of the point I was trying to make. I used the story of the tortoise and the hare and the imagery was very effective. The book contains a ton of stories which as a kid, I couldn't get enough of. It's nicely bound and uses black and white images for most of the stories in it. The price was really fair too so I brought 6 copies with me to China which I gifted to the executive group I was speaking to. It's a great book for all ages and I recommend this product to all buyers.

The Aesop for Children First Edition Aesop 9781470151737 Books Reviews

Once again, I am very disappointed. I bought two different versions of Aesop's Fables. The first version is beautifully illustrated with a hard clothbound cover. Gorgeous. But the fables are abbreviated and many of them do not have the moral explicitly stated.

THIS version has the full version of each fable, along with a moral for each. But the illustrations are black and white, not color. Would have been nice if they had indicated they were just B&W reprinted illustrations.
I actually needed this book for a Folk Literature class, but didn't want to shell out the cash for the actual hard-cover edition. The edition had all the same text as the print book with an interactive table of contents, which is really nifty considering how many stories there are and I only needed to refer to a select few. My only gripe is that the edition doesn't have the illustrations by Milo Winter, but since it was free, I can't complain.

I really do prefer this book's verbiage and canon/version of Aesop's fables. The edition is great for reference, but if you want to read these tales to your kid, you definitely need to get the print copy with all the beautiful pictures.
This book was ideal for our homeschool needs, but is a basic copy of Aesop. If I had it to do over, I'd invest a few more dollars in a Milo Winter copy with beautiful illustrations. My children and I did enjoy the stories, but I feel that a nicer copy would enhance the learning experience.
This review is for the 1986 hardcover edition which has the front cover as pictured with the child sitting in the tree surrounded by animals. It is now out of print, but both used and some new copies are still available. I wanted it as Christmas gift for a grandchild so before ordering I checked with the seller and as he promised, my new copy arrived in pristine gift giving condition. The reviews that state the illustrations are in black and white refer to the paperback. This hardback edition has some black and white illustrations but also many lovely color illustrations - the artistic quality and beauty of the color illustrations is the main reason I wanted this particular book. I also like the inclusion of a table of contents, the tone of the somewhat old fashioned yet easy to understand language, and the morals that are included at the end of each story. Regarding price, I got the last new copy from this particular seller and only paid about $7 plus tax. I see that the remaining new copies have much higher and in some cases even exorbitant prices.
This is a comment about truth in advertising. Nowhere in the description does it say that the illustrations are printed in black and white. And the paper is so thin, you can often see the printed lines showing through from the opposite page. There is a reason the book is offered at such an economical price.
I was disappointed because the drawings are in black and white. Maybe they were originally as well? I should've researched it more because I really wanted our copy of Aesop's Fables to be special so the illustrations were important to me. It was a good price though.
This book advertises to have full color illustrations in both the online description and the back cover. When I received it, however, I was very disappointment to find that not a single illustration was in color and all of them are just about 1-2 inches tall! You practically need a magnifying glass to see what's happening in them. The stories are accurate but this is not a version for reading children.
